چکیده

During normal cell respiration, approximately 0.1–0.2% of the oxygen consumed by aerobic cells is converted into reactive oxygen species (ROS), due to the uncompleted reduction of molecular oxygen in the mitochondrial electron transport chain [1]. ROS includes the superoxide anion radical (O2·), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), alkyl peroxides, singlet oxygen (O2) and the hydroxyl radical (·OH). They are also generated as by-products of several oxygenases, or can be the result of cycle-redox reactions promoted by some pollutants. ROS can be involved in several cellular signaling pathways, including the cell cycle, stress responses, and energy metabolism, and are also important components of defense mechanisms of phagocytic cells [2,3]. However, when in excess ROS can be very deleterious to living organisms because of their ability to oxidize key cell components, such as lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, which sometimes lead to cell death.

Antimicrobial peptides from marine invertebrates.

Marine invertebrates lack an acquired, memory-type immunity based on T-lymphocyte subsets and clonally derived immunoglobulins (72). This differs from the vertebrate immune system, which is characterized by somatic gene rearrangement, clonal selection, and expansion and a discriminative ability that includes lymphocytes, among other factors, which impart specificity and memory (71). Marine inve...

Prevalence and Mechanisms of Dynamic Chemical Defenses in Tropical Sponges

Sponges and other sessile invertebrates are lacking behavioural escape or defense mechanisms and rely therefore on morphological or chemical defenses. Studies from terrestrial systems and marine algae demonstrated facultative defenses like induction and activation to be common, suggesting that sessile marine organisms also evolved mechanisms to increase the efficiency of their chemical defense....

Effects of dietary lead acetate and aluminosilicates on the antioxidative defense system of broilers’ muscle tissues

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplements with lead acetate and aluminosilicates (ATN) on antioxidative enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation of the heart and skeletal muscle tissues of broiler chickens. Broilers were allotted to four diets including the control group, the Pb group, the aluminosilicate-ATN (antitoxic nutrient) group and the Pb+ATN group, i...

Cockroaches, locusts, and envenomating arthropods: a promising source of antimicrobials

Objective(s): To present a brief overview of various natural sources of antimicrobials with the aim of highlighting invertebrates living in polluted environments as additional sources of antimicrobials. Materials and Methods: A PubMed search using antibacterials, antimicrobials, invertebrates, and natural products as keywords was carried out. In addition, we consulted conference proceedings, or...

P 93: The Role of Marine Compounds in Neuroinflammation

Extensive research in the last decade has defined that most chronic diseases display dysregulation of multiple cell signaling pathways that have been linked to inflammation. Neuroinflammation is reaction of living nervous tissue to injury. It may be initiated in response to neurological disease. Including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites and autoimmunity. The natural compoun...
